The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind. The sheer number of experiences I could have is uncountable, breathtaking, and I'm sitting here refreshing my inbox. We live in trapped loops, reliving a few days over and over, and we envision only a handful of paths laid out ahead of us. We see the same things each day, we respond the same way, we think the same thoughts, each day a slight variation of the last, every moment smoothly following the the gentle curves of societal norms. we act like if we just get through today, tomorrow our dreams will come back to us. And no, I don't have all the answers. I don't know how to jolly myself into seeing what each moment could become. But I do know one thing: the solution doesn't involve watering down my every little idea and creative impulse for the sake of some day easing my fit into a mold. It doesn't involve tempering my life to better fit someone's expectations. It doesn't involve constantly holding back for fear of shaking things up. This is very important, so I want to say it as clearly as I can: Fuck. That. Shit. —Randall Munroe More about this quote Tags: wonder fear power change boredom comfort possibilities loops societal norms Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

The rooms of his apartment were full with the dog home again, convalescing. He was satisfied to know, even when she was out of sight, that somewhere in the apartment she was sleeping or eating or sitting watchfully. It was family, he guessed, more or less. Such a house could even be the whole world. —Lydia Millet More about this quote Tags: presence home comfort Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

Marriage is a perilous and fearful effort, it seems to me. . . . It creates pain that it is the only cure for. It is the only comfort for its hardships. . . . Though we had our troubles, we had them in a true perspective. The universe, as we could see any night, is unimaginably large, and mostly empty, and mostly dark. We knew we needed to be together more than we needed to be apart. —Wendell Berry More about this quote Tags: fear perspective pain marriage comfort Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
Nobody can deny but religion is a comfort to the distressed, a cordial to the sick, and sometimes a restraint on the wicked; therefore whoever would argue or laugh it out of the world without giving some equivalent for it ought to be treated as a common enemy. —Lady Mary Worley Montagu More about this quote Tags: religion enemies world comfort Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
God has . . . ordered things that we may learn to bear one another's burdens; for there is no man without his faults, none without his burden. None is sufficient unto himself; none is wise in himself; therefore, we must support one another, comfort, help, teach, and advise one another. —Thomas à Kempis More about this quote Tags: God others wisdom help comfort Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

I have learned that no matter how much I learn about anything, I am always at 'the threshold of ignorance,' a frontier of inner and outer awareness (and lack of it) in which some things have become second nature, some things are new and a little uncomfortable, and some things are a complete mystery. —Rich Frye More about this quote Tags: awareness ignorance learning mystery habit comfort Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

There are lots of ways of being miserable, but there's only one way of being comfortable, and that is to stop running round after happiness.
