Let judges secretly despair of justice: their verdicts will be more acute. Let generals secretly despair of triumph: killing will be defamed. Let priests secretly despair of faith: their compassion will be true. —Leonard Cohen More about this quote Tags: justice faith doubt loss Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

Absolute faith corrupts as absolutely as absolute power. —Eric Hoffer More about this quote Tags: power faith corruption Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love, which is forgiveness. —Reinhold Niebuhr More about this quote Tags: love life history hope beauty accomplishment forgiveness change faith Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
True faith is belief in the reality of absolute values. —William Ralph Inge More about this quote Tags: reality belief faith values Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
The world is full of hundreds of beautiful things we can never possibly have time to discover, and there is no time to be unkind or envious or ungenerous, and no sense in enslaving the mind to the trivialities of the moment. For you can be equal to the greatness of life only by marching with it; not by seeking love but by giving it, nor seeking to be understood but learning to understand. And when it is all over, there will be an agony of remorse because one spared the effort and did not make more of that little span of opportunity; and knowing reality at last, who knows but that one will look back with unassuageable regret upon one's pitiful little faith. —Vivienne de Watteville More about this quote Tags: understanding love reality kindness beauty learning discovery regret faith loss effort greatness opportunity generosity envy agony remorse Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
The dollar sign is the only sign in which the modern man appears to have any real faith. —Helen Rowland More about this quote Tags: money faith greed motivation dollars Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
There is a difference between saying goodbye and letting go. Goodbye is not permanent. You can meet years later and share what happened in your life. You can smile and laugh about all the nonsense that you both went through. However, letting go is being okay with never seeing this person ever again…being okay with never knowing how their life turned out…being okay with fifty or more years of silence…being okay with running into that person at a grocery store and having them not acknowledge your presence. This is the part of life that doesn't sit well with me and never will. It tears my heart in pieces, robs me of gratitude, drains me of anything positive and eats at the faith that holds on. —Shannon L. Alder More about this quote Tags: life silence gratitude presence knowledge man will art seeing heart good faith tears goodbye Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence and back into bondage. —Fraser Tyler More about this quote Tags: history apathy progress nations world faith liberty courage wealth slavery abundance Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
I admire the serene assurance of those who have religious faith. It is wonderful to observe the calm confidence of a Christian with four aces. —Mark Twain More about this quote Tags: religion faith Christianity cards Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
It is my intention to make my entire life a rejection of, a protest against the crimes and injustices of war and political tyranny which threaten to destroy the whole race of [humankind] and the world with [it] . . . . I make monastic silence a protest against the lies of politicians, propagandists, and agitators, and when I speak it is to deny that my faith and my church can ever be aligned with these forces of injustice and destruction. But it is true, nevertheless, that the faith in which I believe is also invoked by many who believe in war, believe in racial injustices, believe in self-righteous and lying forms of tyranny. My life must, then, be a protest against these also, and perhaps against these most of all. —Thomas Merton More about this quote Tags: justice war humanity politics life silence rejection church crime protest faith lies racism tyranny Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email

Starting over can be the scariest thing in the entire world, whether it's leaving a lover, a school, a team, a friend or anything else that feels like a core part of our identity but when your gut is telling you that something here isn't right or feels unsafe, I really want you to listen and trust in that voice. —Jennifer Elisabeth More about this quote Tags: safety change faith trust starting over Permalink for this quote facebook twitter tumblr email
